Omicron Variant Brings Stricter Measures Again

2 December 2021

As you have probably heard in the news, the UK, the newest variant is spreading - originally coming from South Africa. This variant has been named Omicron.

At this point in time, everyone entering the UK will require to take a PCR test and all contacts of the new variant will have to self-isolate even if they're fully vaccinated. The two cases of the new variant have been detected in Brentwood, Essex and Nottingham.

Already, the PM, Boris Johnson, has speculated about there needing to be another vaccine. The original vaccine may not be effective against this strain. As well as this, so far all they really know is the mild symptoms and the fact that it spreads quickly. Yet they're already talking about the latest vaccine. Will this one be worse than the others?

The prime minister said the new measures would be reviewed in three weeks, by which time they should have better information about the "continuing effectiveness" of vaccines.

On top all of this fear mongering, the chief scientist at WHO has pointed to the fact that there are "worrying mutations in the spike protein" - this rendering the current mRNA vaccines moot. This means once again, we're going to be faced with another vaccine that has been rushed.

This variant symptoms are pretty mild. They're listed as sore muscles and tiredness for a day or two. So far, people infected with this variant do not present a loss of taste/smell.

South African Health Minister Assures the Public About Omicron

The South African Health Minister, however, says that there is "absolutely no need to panic."

"We have been here before," Joe Phaahla added, referring to the Beta variant detected in South Africa last December. Phaahla had reiterated that this is no new territory for us and that they have 20-months' worth of experience with COVID-19.

Personally, I feel that this is the type of leadership we need within our country. A leader that reassures their public rather than making them fearful of something that is very similar to the common cold.

Speaking of the common cold. As it is now winter, people are going to get sick anyways. Normally at this time of year, people come down with the flu/cold. But, not people will have to spend their holidays at home because a PCR test has wrongfully said that they're positive with COVID.
